Washington's Contradictory Statements Are Thinking About the Situation and Playing in Ukraine's Favour – Expert

Adrian Karatnycky, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, noted that the contradictory statements from Washington soften the situation and, to some extent, contribute to Ukraine's interests.

He expressed this opinion in an interview with Ukrinform.

Karatnycky stressed that the events of recent days indicate possible changes in America's position regarding its obligations to Europe to protect EU countries.

“Oddly enough, these statements and signals to some extent help Ukraine, encouraging EU leaders to engage in meaningful discussions about the need to strengthen defense capabilities and the realization that Ukraine is of critical importance for ensuring the security, stability and protection of Europe,” the expert added.

He noted that the ER “cannot abandon Ukraine” but must find adequate resources to compensate for American aid if the United States does not intend to continue to defend Ukraine in the conflict with Russia.

The expert also added that pressure on Ukraine to achieve a ceasefire and capitulation would be unacceptable for the Ukrainian leadership.

Karatnycky pointed out that the Ukrainian authorities are determined to have peace, but such peace must protect their sovereignty, provide stable security guarantees and provide funds for post-war reconstruction.

Despite signs of significant changes in American foreign policy, certain levers of influence in Europe remain strengthened, he noted. This is especially true of the $300 billion in Russian assets that are now frozen.

At the moment, only the proceeds from these assets are being used, he said. However, in an emergency, EU leaders who continue to reject the possibility of using these resources as a substitute for American aid would come under serious pressure, he explained.

As reported by Ukrinform, on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is on a working visit to Washington, where he will hold talks with President Donald Trump.
