Ukraine and Seven EU Countries File Complaint to UN Over Jamming of Russian Satellites – Media

Eight European countries, including Ukraine, have filed a complaint with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) within the UN, accusing Russia of deliberately interfering with satellite communications in Europe.

The complaint, signed by Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Panama, Ukraine, Finland, France and the Netherlands, was filed with the highest international body responsible for regulating satellite communications – the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which is part of the UN system, as reported by Ukrinform with reference to NOS.

In addition, the complaint was supported by seventeen other EU member states and the United Kingdom.

The states demand that Russia immediately stop these acts of sabotage.

Over the course of the year, several European countries have experienced disruptions in the operation of satellites of the continent's two main satellite operators: Eutelsat and SES. These satellites are used for radio and television communications, as well as for aviation navigation.

The most notable disruption occurred last spring, when Russian military propaganda suddenly appeared twice on BabyTV in the Netherlands and other European countries. During the same period, propaganda images were broadcast several times on Ukrainian TV channels.

Eutelsat, based in France, and SES from Sweden and Luxembourg investigated the disruptions last year and concluded that the disruptions originated in the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
