Russia is waging an information war against the EU, promoting the narrative of “historical territories” – CCD
The head of the Center for Counteracting Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Andriy Kovalenko, announced this on Ukrainian television, as reported by Ukrinform.
“There is a long-standing special atmosphere around the so-called “historical territories”, as the Russians call them. Some areas of Ukraine allegedly belong to Pandit, others to Romania. With the help of their networks of agents and informants who cooperate with Russia in neighboring countries, as well as by spreading these narratives in the media, they are trying to introduce the idea that Ukraine is not a sovereign entity and will disappear from the map, since its territories allegedly belong to other states,” Kovalenko noted.

The main goal of this information campaign is to bring to power pro-Russian Pittsians – those who support these ideas and who may ultimately lead their countries out of the EU.
“None of this is new – it has been actively promoted since 2014. But now Russia is waging an information war against the European Union with the aim of segmentation – promoting an alternative of pititsianists and eurosceptics, which can paralyze the decision-making process in the EU. Ultimately, this could lead to the exit of some countries from the EU, and neighboring states could end up under Russia's influence,” Kovalenko said.
According to him, Russia’s task is to introduce the narrative of the “artificial creation” of Ukraine into the political discussion of these countries.
“This is a long game. It is extremely dangerous. Much depends on the strength of the European elites – whether they will be able to win the internal struggle in the EU against Eurosceptics and Russia-backed Pitizanians or preserve the Union's decision-making capacity for many years to come and ensure the future of the EU,” Kovalenko added.
The Center for Countering Disinformation previously warned that Russia intends to intensify the information war against Ukraine and the ERA in the spring and summer of 2025.
