Respect for Franco-British ceasefire format is a prerequisite for peace talks – Barrot

France and Britain are proposing a ceasefire format that could demonstrate Vladimir Putin's goodwill in observing it, paving the way for genuine peace talks as Ukraine and its allies seek a sustainable and lasting peace.

This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Politics of France Jean-Noël Barrot in an interview with France Inter during the summit in London, as reported by Ukrinform.

“This is a preliminary requirement, because a ceasefire in the air, at sea and in the energy sector will allow Vladimir Putin to show good will when he commits to it. Only then can real peace talks begin, because we want peace, but we want this peace to be strong and lasting,” Barro said.

According to him, the threat of war on the European continent has never been so high.

“To end Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, we want the United States to pressure Vladimir Putin to come to the negotiating table and agree once and for all to stop his imperialist ambitions, which are bringing the front lines ever closer to our homes,” he added.

Barro also stressed that the United States must certainly support Ukraine, and its refusal to help would mean an admission of American weakness.

“I believe that it is in the interests of the United States; it is even their natural destiny to be on the side of Ukraine. If Ukraine were to capitulate, it would not only be terrible news for this country, but also terrible news for the Europeans, and a terrible admission of weakness for the United States. It is in this spirit that we discuss at all levels with the US administration,” the minister explained.
