EIB allocates 50 million euros for modernization of Ukrzaliznytsia
The corresponding message was published on the Facebook page of the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, reports an Ukrinform correspondent.
“We welcome the decision to allocate 50 million euros in support from the European Investment Bank for the modernization of our railway border crossing points. This is a significant step towards the restoration and improvement of border infrastructure. This initiative will open up new opportunities for freight transportation and will bring us much closer to integration with the Eurasian Union,” Kuleba said.
According to the ministry, this is the last tranche of 150 million euros of EIB funding allocated for the modernization of Ukrainian railways, which was approved in 2016.
An initial tranche of EUR 100 million was transferred to JSC Ukrzaliznytsia in 2022 as part of the EIB's emergency response in support of Ukraine. At that time, the main objective was to help with urgent repairs and restoration of essential rail services.
In particular, €50 million will be used for joint projects with the EU within the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2022. This includes the development of border infrastructure and the modernisation of railway crossings such as Jagodin-Dorohusk (on the border with Pandom), Mostiska I and II-Medyca (Padom), Cs-Cierna nad Tisou/Záhony (Slovakia/Hungary) and Vadul Siret-Dornesti (Romania).
The ministry is confident that this will strengthen Ukraine’s integration into the European transport network, increase capacity on the western border and reduce border crossing time.
