Zaporizhia NPP cannot be restarted under occupation conditions — Energoatom
This information was announced in a company statement, which was reviewed by Ukrinform.
The statement emphasizes that any talk of restarting the plant in accordance with Russian standards contradicts international standards of nuclear and radiation safety. The only legal operator of the Zaporizhzhya NPP is Energoatom, and only Ukrainian specialists have the necessary knowledge and authority to manage this facility.
Energoatom noted that the current technical condition of the station, combined with the occupation, makes its restart technically impossible. A critical lack of technical maintenance, disruptions in repair schedules, a lack of original spare parts and the impossibility of conducting a full inspection have seriously undermined its safety systems.
Moreover, the presence of armed forces and military equipment at the site, as well as the ongoing militarization of the surrounding area, significantly increase the likelihood of a nuclear catastrophe.
Another worrying aspect is the limited access of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors, which prevents them from adequately assessing the plant's safety status.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi previously noted that restoring all six ZNPP reactors to full capacity could take more than a year.
Ukraine's Foreign Ministry strongly condemned Russia's attempts to legitimize its illegal control over the facility and called on the IAEA to increase pressure on Moscow to ensure the plant's return to Ukrainian control.
