Accountability must be established for ceasefire violations: British ambassador

Establishing responsibility for future ceasefire violations is an important aspect of ensuring Ukraine's security.

This point of view was expressed by the British Ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Harris, in a conversation with Ukrinform.

“There is one point about monitoring the ceasefire. This needs to be given special attention to ensure that any violations have consequences and that it is made clear who is responsible for provocations, as we have seen before, if the ceasefire is violated,” Harris said.

According to the diplomat, the main goal of security guarantees is to prevent a new attack from Russia.

“What we are discussing now in the Coalition of the Willing is another element of this, namely how to ensure that Ukraine's security is strengthened and protected in the future, so that Russia does not attack again. This is the basis of Ukraine's security,” he emphasized.

He declined to comment on reports that British special forces had been put on alert amid discussions about sending an international military contingent to Ukraine.

The ambassador also noted that the possibility of deploying British and other troops is currently being considered. “We have made it clear that we will deploy them to Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached, to ensure that this element is in place and also to enhance Ukraine's security,” he said.

According to the British ambassador, military planners in the UK are currently discussing specific deployment methods.

As reported, on March 27, during a meeting of leaders on the issue of providing assistance to Ukraine, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the issue of the potential deployment of British troops in Ukraine could eventually be put to a vote in parliament.

At the same time, he stressed that any possible deployment of a Western contingent in Ukraine would require the participation of the United States.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that a Franco-British military team would travel to Ukraine to develop a concept for training Ukrainian troops in the future.
