Ancient burial site discovered in Nikolaev region

During the construction of fortifications in the south of Ukraine, scouts from the 123rd territorial defense brigade came across an ancient burial site dating back to the 6th-5th centuries BC.

The brigade reported this on its Facebook page, Ukrinform reports.

“In the process of creating fortifications in the south of Ukraine, standard excavation work turned into a sensational archaeological discovery. Excavator operator Mika found a small amphora. Intrigued by the find, he turned to his friend Evgeniy, who is interested in history. Together they decided to donate the artifact to the Museum of the Staroflotskaya Barracks,” the report says.

Museum experts, having studied the find, determined that it was an Ionian amphora, used for ritual purposes and placed in graves. The place where fortification works were carried out turned out to be an archaic burial site dating back to the 6th-5th centuries BC.

Another example of Corinthian ceramics, oinochoe, was of particular interest to museum specialists. This ancient Greek jug with one handle and three spouts was used for pouring wine during symposia, ritual feasts in ancient Greece that were accompanied by boisterous fun and were an important part of men's leisure time.

“These are ritual objects, specially intended for burials, brought from Greece. It is important that the objects were preserved intact, without damage, which indicates the high social status of the buried,” explained the former archaeologist and teacher of the Nikolaev National University named after V. A. Sukhomlinsky, now a serviceman eksandr.

Along with the artifacts, the military personnel of the civil-military cooperation service also handed over the remains of an ancient pele to the museum.

Earlier in the same area, on the bank of the Southern Bug River, shepherds found a flint knife from the Neolithic era.
