Ukraine has sent a request to the IAEA asking it to verify information about damage to a diesel tank at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which is under Russian control, and to assess the consequences of a possible accident, Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tykhyi said.
“Yesterday I reported damage to a diesel tank at the Zaporizhzhya NPP. We immediately asked the IAEA to verify this information and assess the consequences of a potential accident through a mission that is located directly at the occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP. We are currently awaiting reports and updates from the IAEA on this issue,” he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Thursday.
According to Tykhy, the Ukrainian side is also in dialogue with the IAEA about the possibility of a repetition of similar incidents at the occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP, given that the station is managed by unlicensed external personnel.
“Speaking about personnel, I would like to emphasize that we have opened a separate humanitarian track with the IAEA, where we are discussing the possibility of returning the captured and illegally detained employees of the Zaporizhzhya NPP to the territory under our control. Ukraine is fighting for all its citizens, both civilian and military, as well as NPP workers. This is part of our dialogue,” the speaker emphasized.
On March 26, Tikhiy reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received information about damage to a diesel tank at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant.
“The spilled fuel is enough to operate the station's emergency generators for 25 days,” the spokesman said.
