Ukraine's power system aims to restore 3 GW of generating capacity damaged by Russian attacks by the end of this year, according to an updated document prepared following the seventh review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Ukraine, which was published on the website of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“Overall, we managed to restore 4 GW of power capacity in 2024, and another 3 GW is planned for 2025. In addition, more than 0.8 GW of new generation was commissioned in 2024, and 0.9 GW of distributed gas generation is planned for 2025,” the report notes.
“Our top priority remains reducing the negative impact of the war on the energy sector. We continue to pursue a multilateral approach to addressing the energy crisis, with donor coordination taking place through the Ukrainian Donor Platform (UDP) and the G7+ energy group,” the statement said.
“We continue to work hard to repair the damage to our generating capacity and ensure sufficient electricity supply for households and businesses, including for the next heating season. We are committed to making our energy system more resilient to future attacks, including through decentralized energy generation, including gas turbines, and a green transformation in a supportive market and regulatory environment with an independent energy regulator,” the document states.
“The affected companies primarily use their working capital to repair and restore energy assets, and we appreciate the ongoing donor support, including the provision of equipment. We require additional financial assistance from donors to support repairs, as well as decentralized power generation support programs, including gas generation projects,” it emphasizes.
