Lubinets and IAEA Director General Discuss Security and Humanitarian Situation at Zaporizhzhya NPP

Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi discussed security and humanitarian conditions at the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

As reported by Ukrinform, Lubinets reported this on Telegram.

“During the discussion, he emphasized the importance of the security and humanitarian situation around the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which from the first days of the Russian occupation became a zone of nuclear terror, violations of human rights and international humanitarian law,” Lubinets noted.

The Ombudsman expressed gratitude to Grossi “for his personal involvement in these difficult processes, his consistent support for the principles of nuclear safety and his clear position on the inadmissibility of the use of nuclear energy for military purposes.”

The parties agreed to maintain constant contact regarding the situation at the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

As reported, the Zaporizhzhya NPP was captured by the Russian military on March 4, 2022. In September, the plant completely stopped generating electricity. Russian soldiers and military equipment are located on the territory of the nuclear facility. As a result of shelling, external power lines of the Zaporizhzhya NPP were repeatedly damaged.

In June 2023, Russian troops blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. Due to the destruction of the Kakhovka reservoir caused by these actions, the Zaporizhzhya NPP only has enough water to operate in emergency mode.
