The construction of the Chernivtsi-Suceava (Romania) Eurorailway will begin in 2026, and a feasibility study is currently being prepared, Deputy Finance Minister Alexandru Kava said.
“Under an optimistic scenario, construction work on the Eurorailway from Suceava (Romania) to Chernivtsi could begin next year… A feasibility study for the project is currently being prepared. Chernivtsi has the opportunity to become the second regional center after Uzhgorod, which will receive direct access to the Eurorailway right in the city,” Kava noted at the conference “Logistics as a Driver of Economic Growth” organized by the We Build Ukraine analytical center.
According to him, the construction of the Chop-Uzhgorod European railway is currently underway, financed 50% through Connecting Europe Facilities (CEF) and 50% from the state budget.
Kava added that the launch of this Eurorail is planned for the summer of 2025.
“This (Eurorail Chop-Uzhgorod) will not only provide the opportunity to carry out direct passenger transportation from Uzhgorod to Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, Vienna, Dresden, but will also allow shippers working in Uzhgorod to send cargo via Eurorail to their European partners, as well as receive goods, containers and materials from European countries directly to Uzhgorod,” the Deputy Minister emphasized.
Earlier it was reported that JSC Ukrzaliznytsia made temporary changes to the schedule of a number of passenger trains to Uzhgorod until the end of July in connection with large-scale work on laying the European standard track between Chop and Uzhgorod.
Vice Prime Minister for Reconstruction of Ukraine – Minister of Communities and Territories Development Oleksiy Kuleba, at a meeting with the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tsitsikostas, said that direct rail service with European gauge to Uzhgorod will be launched in the second half of 2025.
