Norway allocated $95 million for gas imports to Ukraine

This was reported in a press release from the Norwegian government, Ukrinform reports.

“A secure energy supply is key to Ukraine's resilience. This was one of the issues discussed during President Zelenskyy's visit to Norway last week. There is an urgent need to increase financing for gas imports to provide electricity and heating for homes, offices and public institutions. Norway is doing its part to meet this need,” said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

It is specified that the financing will be carried out through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and will be used to purchase gas from Western sources.

The recipient of the gas will be the Ukrainian state-owned company Naftogaz.

The imported gas will be used to meet consumption needs and increase gas reserves in case of further attacks on the gas infrastructure.

The funds are provided under the Nansen Support Programme for Ukraine, and NOK 1 billion ($95 million) was taken from the 2025 budget for Ukraine's energy sector.

“Access to electricity is essential to ensure the safety of the Ukrainian population and to enable society to continue to function. Attacks on Ukraine's electricity supply systems are and have been an attack on the very foundations of Ukrainian society. They are part of an attempt to weaken the Ukrainian economy and undermine citizens' trust in their government. That is why it is vital and strategically necessary to maintain access to gas,” said Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.

As reported by Ukrinform, on March 26, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) approved a loan of up to 270 million euros for NAK Naftogaz of Ukraine to purchase gas for the next two heating seasons in Ukraine.
