Why do German housewives pour salt into the toilet?

When I first heard that Germans clean toilets with salt, my first reaction was simple and understandable: “Here's another oddity!” But, as they say, you shouldn't draw conclusions until you try it yourself. And then I thought: what if there's something ingenious in this, informs Ukr.Media.

Germans are a pedantic people, they have order everywhere: on the roads, in documents, and even in conversations – everything is strictly according to plan. My idea of them was completely different when I found out that in everyday life they are sometimes even more untidy! Yes, yes, you didn't hear. Sometimes their toilets are in the same condition as in a pub after a football match. But don't worry, there is a plan B for that. And it's not an army of cleaning robots, but ordinary table salt!

Imagine the situation. Guests are coming home soon, and the toilet is clearly not ready to welcome them. The plaque, the smell… and then the panic begins! What to do? Household chemicals? Pfft, too expensive! In Germany, you have to pay about 3-4 euros for a toilet cleaner, and salt costs only 50-80 cents. What will a real German housewife choose? Of course, she grabs a pack of salt like a knight with a sword, and goes into battle!

The process here is almost magical: the hostess takes salt, sprinkles it around the edges of the toilet (not in the water), takes a brush and, like in a fitness class, begins to actively rub. Sodium chloride (and, wait a second, this is not just salt – it's science) eats away the smell and prevents the reproduction of all those microbes that thought they could stay for the evening.

And you know what? Germans don't stop at toilets! Clogged sink? Why overpay 3-4 euros for 'Krit' when you have the same salt at hand! Half a pack of salt in the drain, a little vinegar on top – and you can plug the plug. After half an hour or an hour – no clog! And, most importantly, all this is cheap and angry.

To be honest, I was both amused and surprised by this. Since I'm used to modern products with five levels of protection against bacteria and odors, I didn't believe that salt could be so effective at cleaning. Surprisingly, it really is effective: if it works, why not try it?
