U.S. preparing to release text of deal that can unlock funds for Ukraine – Pitico

Senator James Lankford, Republicans' t negotiator on a potential border and immigration deal that could unlock tens of billions in aid for Ukraine, said on Sunday that lawmakers could release the text of an agreement as soon as this week.

That's according to Pitico, Ukrinform reports.

"Text hefully this week, to be able to get that out. Everybody will have time to be able to read and go through it. No one's going to be jammed in this process," Lankford said.

According to him, this agreement has to work and "everyone's counting on this actually working."

"If we can pass this in the days ahead in the Senate and send it over the House, the House can work to improve it or the House can take a serious look at it and say look, 'this makes real progress on the border, let's go get this, bank this and then keep going for more'," Lankford said.

The White House and U.S. Congress are trying to reach an agreement that would ensure the provision of military aid to two U.S. allies, including Ukraine, and simultaneously prevent illegal immigration across the U.S.-Mexico border.

On December 20, the leaders of both parties announced that the Senate would not vote on a package to provide additional aid to Ukraine and strengthen border security until early 2024, even as negotiators from Democrats and Republicans continued their work.
