Sandu on elections in Romania: Mdova wishes partners in Bucharest not to follow Moscow's instructions

Moldovan President Maia Sandu plans to maintain strong ties with Romania after the presidential elections scheduled for May.

This was reported by NewsMaker, citing Ukrinform.

“We want to continue to develop the excellent partnership with Romania, so that we can rely on it, as we have done in recent years. The last thing we want is for our partners in Bucharest to take orders from Moscow, but I sincerely hope that this will not happen. Romania is a strong, democratic and pro-European state. However, there are risks, especially for the more established democracies. I believe that citizens will be able to unite and overcome these challenges,” Sandu said on the air of the “La 360 de grade” program on Radio Moldova.

She expressed confidence that the post of President of Romania will be taken by a citizen with pro-European views, who will help Moldova move towards European integration.

“We need a president with whom we can continue to cooperate, who will support our efforts and also facilitate Moldova's accession to the EU. We have ambitious plans: to build bridges, a highway, to implement economic integration, to streamline customs processes to reduce waiting times. To implement these projects, we need a reliable partner,” Sandu added.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Romanian government has approved new dates for the presidential elections, which will take place in May. On November 24 last year, little-known far-right pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu won the first round of the presidential elections in Romania.

Romania's Constitutional Court later annulled the results of the first round amid allegations that Russia had conducted a coordinated online campaign to promote a far-right candidate and ensure his victory in the first round.
