G7 plans further measures to pressure Russia into ceasefire – UK Foreign Secretary

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said G7 foreign ministers had agreed a new pressure strategy at a meeting in Canada aimed at pushing Russia into serious ceasefire talks.

The Guardian reports this, Ukrinform reports.

He noted that the ceasefire proposal was now under discussion. “Ukraine is serious about peace,” and it was now up to President Putin to decide how to respond.

“I warn Mr Putin: if you are really serious, confirm it with a complete and unconditional ceasefire right now,” Lammy said.

He added that Putin appeared to have no interest in a ceasefire, so the G7 was considering possible next steps.

“If Putin does not live up to his commitments, and I must tell the House that I see no sign at this point that he is prepared to do so, the G7 meeting prepared us to create the conditions to force Russia to negotiate seriously. We are not waiting for the Kremlin. If they reject the ceasefire, we will have more room to maneuver,” he added.

Lammy highlighted the significant impact of unprecedented G7 sanctions on Russia's vulnerable economy and called on allies to keep up the pressure.

“In Canada, we discussed what steps we could take next to target their [Russian] energy and defense sectors, further reduce their oil revenues and use frozen Russian assets,” he said.

The Minister also reaffirmed his continued support for Ukraine, noting that European countries must take on their share of responsibility.

G7 foreign ministers met in Canada on March 13-14. They reaffirmed their continued support for Ukraine and stressed the importance of ensuring security for Ukraine after the conflict.
