Grossi considers UN run

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has said he is “very seriously” considering running for the post of UN Secretary-General when it becomes vacant in 2026.

According to Ukrinform, citing the Argentine publication La Nacion, Grossi made this statement on Tuesday during his speech at an event of the Argentine Council on International Relations (CARI).

“The process of selecting Guterres' successor… will begin later this year, when the call for nominations will be made in the UN General Assembly. I am considering this possibility and I am taking it very seriously. That is all I can say at this time,” he added.

Grossi said he would be pleased if his home country, Argentina, nominated him for the post of UN Secretary-General. He also stressed that the final decision on the matter should be made by President Javier Miley, adding that they have “very good relations” and have met several times.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock confirmed her intentions to run for the post of President of the UN General Assembly.

The term of office of the President of the UN General Assembly officially begins in September 2025, when a new cycle of work of the UN General Parliamentary Assembly begins.
