Scientists from the US have named a way to make fatty foods more beneficial for the body

By adding spices to food containing a large amount of fats and carbohydrates, you reduce its harmful effects on health, experts from the University of Pennsylvania (USA) reported, Ukr.Media reports.

High-calorie foods provoke an inflammatory response in the body. Under the influence of chronic inflammation, a person begins to accumulate excess weight and is also at increased risk of developing cardiovascular and oncological diseases.

The researchers used a mixture of basil, bay leaves, black pepper, cinnamon, coriander, cumin, ginger, oregano, parsley, red pepper, rosemary, thyme, and turmeric in the experiment. Twelve volunteers aged 40 to 65, most of whom were overweight, participated in the study.

Each participant tried three high-calorie meals over three days: no spices, with two grams of spices added, and with six grams of spices added. After each experimental meal, the subjects had four blood tests so that the experts could track how much the food affected markers of inflammation in the body.

After analyzing the data, the researchers found that inflammatory cytokine levels were reduced the most after eating a meal containing six grams of spices. That's about one teaspoon of dried spices or one tablespoon if you use some of the herbs (basil, parsley, thyme, oregano) fresh.

Adding spices to your food is generally a good idea, as many spices have beneficial properties. However, you shouldn't rely on spices alone to “neutralize” the harm of constantly eating unhealthy foods. Remember the importance of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle in general.
