Experts explained how dangerous old towels are and how often they should be changed
In the arsenal of each person, as a rule, there are at least four towels – for the body, for the face, for the hands and for the feet. Part of the dead skin cells, sebum and our microorganisms remain in the fibers of the fabric, serving as a breeding ground for other microbes and causing an unpleasant odor. Therefore, towels must be washed regularly and replaced with new ones, experts noted, Ukr.Media informs.
They also explained how often to change towels for each body part.
Large bath towels, provided they dry out, can be changed every three to four days. If a person takes a shower several times a day, then the time of use is reduced to a day. And a face towel should be changed more often – once every two to three days. A hand towel needs to be changed every day. We wash our hands most often, which is why it is better to have several replaceable towels, experts advised.
Dermatovenereologists have given recommendations on how to care for towels.
It is recommended to wash towels at a temperature not lower than 60 °C. However, if the properties of the fabric do not allow this, the towels must be ironed. Fabric conditioners reduce the absorption of the fabric, so there is no need to add them during washing. Conditioners leave a film on the fabric, which can reduce their hygroscopicity. And towels should be dried in a well-ventilated room.
Experts explained that you need to look at the fabric structure to determine the expiration date of towels.
Their fabric structure changes: terry towels begin to lose their fibers, and waffle towels “fluff up”, leaving thread particles on the skin, visible only under a microscope. Regular contact with such towels can lead to exacerbation of chronic skin diseases, itching of the skin, and difficulty breathing in patients with asthma.
In conclusion, doctors noted that the average lifespan of any towel is from two to five years.
