German Bundesrat approves military aid to Ukraine in the amount of 3 billion euros

Germany's upper house of parliament, the Bundesrat, has approved constitutional changes that will allow for increased budget spending in three key areas, including an additional 3 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine.

As reported by Ukrinform correspondent, the voting took place on Friday, March 21.

The measure, adopted by the Bundestag on March 18, was supported by 35 representatives of Germany's federal states, which corresponds to the required two-thirds majority of votes – 46. Four states abstained.

The budget increase was made possible by an exception to the “debt brake” rule that limits the government's ability to borrow.

With this approval, there are no obstacles left for the allocation of 3 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine this year.

The German Ministry of Defense has already begun putting together an aid package before a final decision is made. Some elements – such as certain types of ammunition, vehicles, and drones – could be delivered within weeks or months. However, more complex systems, including the IRIS-T air defense pods, will take longer to produce. The ministry can now proceed with contracts to produce the necessary weapons.
