Former Kyiv City Council deputy Komarnytsky fled abroad, using a car to transport fallen soldiers

Former Kyiv City Council deputy Denys Komarnytskyi, suspected of creating a criminal organization with the aim of seizing capital land, used a car intended to transport the bodies of deceased Ukrainian soldiers to illegally cross the Ukrainian border and flee the country.

According to the materials of the investigation of the UP, after the start of the operation of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP), Komarnytskyi hid in Kyiv and Kyiv region for four days. On February 10, he turned to his friend with a request to help him cross the Ukrainian border to avoid investigation.

A journalistic investigation revealed that Komarnytskyi left the country using connections in the SBU and the National Police. He was taken by car from Kyiv to the city of Khust in Transcarpathia. Another car with the mark “200” was driving ahead, which is used to transport fallen soldiers. This helped to avoid checks at checkpoints.

After arriving in Transcarpathia, Komarnytsky stayed in hotels in Khust and Uzhhorod for several days, and later crossed the border with Romania and asked for asylum. According to “Ukrainian Pravda”, several law enforcement officers helped him escape, including:

  • four people with SBU ID cards;
  • two employees of the Strategic Investigations Department of the National Police;
  • one local MP.

Reaction of the SBU and the National Police

The Security Service of Ukraine confirmed Komarnytsky's escape, but denied that regular security service employees helped him. The SBU reported that the individuals who participated in the suspect's removal were only freelancers and had lost this status before his escape.

The National Police confirmed the involvement of two of its officers in organizing the escape. They have already been released, and their actions are being investigated.

What is Komarnytsky suspected of?

Komarnytsky is suspected of organizing a large-scale corruption scheme related to the illegal appropriation of land plots in Kyiv. According to the NABU, in 2023-2024, land worth 11.6 million hryvnias was illegally seized through criminal actions, and attempts to illegally appropriate another 83 million hryvnias were stopped.

In total, law enforcement officers have identified 10 suspects, including Deputy Head of Kyiv City Administration Petro Olenych. Komarnytsky himself denies all charges and claims that he is abroad “on legal grounds” and is visiting his family, who fled the war.

Meanwhile, NABU Director Semen Kryvonos announced that they plan to put Komarnytsky on the international wanted list.
