A spawning ban starts in the Kyiv region on April 1: what fishermen need to know
From April 1, 2025, a spawning ban on the fishing of aquatic biological resources will come into effect in the Kyiv region, which will last for 70 days.
Spawning is a special period for the restoration of aquatic bioresources, since the quality and abundance of aquatic bioresources in reservoirs depends on its success.
In order to ensure the preservation of favorable conditions for the natural reproduction of aquatic biological resources, the Rules of Amateur Fishing prohibit the movement of all vehicles or motor vessels during the spawning period, with the exception of vessels used by fish protection authorities and other authorized state authorities.
Commercial fishing and spearfishing are also prohibited.
The ban on catching aquatic biological resources in water bodies of the Kyiv region comes into force on different dates depending on the type of water bodies:
- in all reservoirs and lakes with bays, straits, including the flooding zone – from April 1 to June 9 (inclusive);
- in all rivers and their headwaters – from April 1 to May 20 (inclusive);
- in newly created water bodies, as well as in the ancillary system of rivers and other water bodies – from April 1 to June 29 (inclusive)
- a ban on catching (harvesting) crayfish in the spring and summer period of their spawning, larvae, first and second molts in 2025 – from April 1 to June 13 and from July 15 to September 1.
According to the Rules of Amateur Fishing, during spawning, amateur and sport fishing of up to 3 (three) kg of fish per daylight hour (one hour before sunrise and one hour after sunset) is allowed with one float or bottom fishing rod with one hook and spinning from the shoreline of reservoirs and rivers in places specified in the List of places designated for amateur fishing during the spring-summer ban.
Violation of fishing rules during this period is punishable by a fine or criminal liability. Illegal fishing, which causes significant damage, entails criminal liability in accordance with Article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The Kyiv Fish Protection Patrol calls on citizens to be responsible and comply with the requirements of environmental legislation.
