Ukrainian rail operator launches Lokomotiv company to manage existing depots

<p> “To be honest, I was impressed. All three depots operate with highly motivated teams. The Shevchenko depot is a hub for diesel locomotive construction – many sections of the railway remain non-electrified, making diesel locomotives essential. Previously, many spare parts came from Russia, but the depot adapted by developing its own manufacturing capabilities. Znamenka is a potential hub for our new dual-system locomotives, with prepared premises and trained personnel. It can also become a high-quality base for the maintenance of modern electric locomotives,” he concluded.</p>
<p> He also singled out the Podolsk depot, where a training center will be organized to replace Russian-made parts.</p>
<p> “Podolsk is a unique place. Local legend Vladimir Mykolaichuk reprogrammed the electronics of Russian VL series locomotives with his own hands, ensuring our independence from Russian manufacturers. Our locomotives will function, and Russian manufacturers… will have to look for other solutions,” Pertsovsky added.</p>
<p> Ukrzaliznytsia has about 50 locomotive depots, including repair depots (responsible for major repairs and modernization) and operational depots (which carry out technical maintenance between trips).</p>
<p> Earlier it was reported that the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provided Ukrzaliznytsia with two credit lines: 180 million euros for the purchase of gas piston units and 300 million euros for the purchase of electric locomotives.</p>
<p> In addition, the US government is expected to support Ukrzaliznytsia's locomotive renewal project with a grant of up to US$195 million, to be administered by the World Bank through the Relief, Recovery, Reconstruction and Reform Trust Fund (URTF) for Ukraine in the process of restoring essential logistics infrastructure and network connectivity (RELINC).</p>
<p> A significant portion of Ukrzaliznytsia's electric locomotives have already exceeded their service life and will soon be decommissioned due to wear and tear and corrosion, which reduces their operational capabilities.</p>
