Ukraine to Strengthen Energy Cooperation with the Netherlands and Denmark

Ukraine is negotiating with the Netherlands on the possibility of using its domestic gas storage facilities to meet the energy needs of EU countries, and is also developing projects with Denmark to restore damaged energy infrastructure.

This was reported in a press release from the Ministry of Energy, distributed by Ukrinform during a meeting of EU energy ministers in Brussels.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko focused on increasing energy security in the Eurasian region at a bilateral meeting with Dutch Climate and Green Growth Minister Schie Hermans. The potential use of Ukrainian gas storage facilities for EU needs was discussed during the talks.

Galushchenko noted that European traders stored gas in Ukrainian underground storage facilities during the winter period of 2023-2024, emphasizing that such storage by European companies is of key importance for ensuring the EU's energy security. He added that Ukraine, with the largest gas capacity in Europe, offers an efficient and cost-effective infrastructure with high-performance interconnectors.

The meeting also discussed issues of protecting energy and gas infrastructure, as well as the Netherlands' support for Ukraine's fuel and energy sector, including the supply of necessary equipment for restoration.

Galushchenko also met with the Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities of Denmark Lars Aagaard to discuss strengthening the energy partnership between Ukraine and Denmark. The discussion also raised issues of supporting Ukraine's energy sector, the ongoing restoration of infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks, and the development of renewable energy sources.

The Ukrainian Minister noted the success of joint projects to restore infrastructure, emphasizing that the Ukrainian-Danish partnership helped to meet critical needs in the Nikolaev region. The parties agreed to continue cooperation in these areas, as well as in the field of cyber protection of information energy infrastructure facilities.
