Ukraine's border with the EU operates smoothly after the launch of a new system — State Border Service of Ukraine

The State Border Service of Ukraine has not recorded any delays at the border with the EU after the full launch of the new Entry-Exit System (EES), which the European Union introduced on April 10.

This was stated by the spokesman for the State Border Service of Ukraine, Andriy Demchenko, in a comment to Radio Liberty.

According to him, the EU entry-exit system began to be implemented gradually from October 2025, connecting individual checkpoints. At first, these were checkpoints on the border with Poland and Hungary, and later with Slovakia and Romania.

Demchenko noted that the phased implementation has avoided disruptions and delays at the border. Since October, no significant slowdowns in transport traffic have been recorded from the Ukrainian side.

The EU's automated system for registering the entry and exit of third-country nationals, the Entry/Exit System (EES), has been fully operational since April 10. It is intended to speed up and simplify border crossings, as well as increase security through better document control.

The system will also automatically track the number of days travelers stay in the EU under the visa-free regime (90 days within a 180-day period).

How will the new system work at the border?

When entering the Schengen area for the first time, the traveler will need to complete a full registration. The algorithm looks like this:

1. First entry: passport scanning and biometrics submission;

2. Saving data in the system;

3. Next trips: quick check without re-registration.
