Trump's megaproject: a 76-meter arch could change the panorama of the US capital

Donald Trump's administration has unveiled a plan for a 250-foot-tall triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. The initiative has already sparked political controversy, lawsuits, and criticism from veterans' organizations.

The New York Times writes about this.

U.S. officials have unveiled a concept for a massive arch that they plan to install in the roundabout area near the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C. The project, initiated by Trump, is being billed as part of a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States.

According to the released drawings, the structure will reach approximately 76 meters in height and will have decorative elements in the form of eagles and a winged figure at the top. According to the authors, the arch should resemble the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and become a new symbol of the American capital.

The project has been submitted to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts for consideration, which is expected to evaluate it at an upcoming meeting. The architectural concept is by Harrison Design.

At the same time, the initiative has already caused a wave of criticism. Some politicians and public organizations claim that the arch could significantly change the historic landscape of the area between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, as well as block key viewing axes.

In addition, veterans' organizations filed lawsuits, citing the excesses of executive authority and the need for Congressional approval of the project.
