South Korean broadcasters sue OpenAI: the company trained ChatGPT on their news without permission

Three South Korean broadcasters, KBS, MBC, and SBS, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in the Seoul Central District Court, seeking an injunction and compensation for copyright infringement.

This is reported by KBS.

The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI unauthorizedly used news content from broadcasters when training its generative artificial intelligence, ChatGPT.

The Korean Broadcasting Association stated that broadcasters' news materials are their core assets and achievements, so using them in large quantities and without permission is an infringement of intellectual property .

The association highlighted ChatGPT's large profits, and the fact that OpenAI “has signed paid licensing agreements with media companies around the world to develop and operate generative artificial intelligence.”

“OpenAI is likely fully aware that it must obtain a legal and valid license to use news content. However, OpenAI refuses to negotiate with the three broadcasters and adheres to its discriminatory copyright policy,” the association added.

The broadcasters and the association said they intend to use the lawsuit to find ways to harmoniously develop the AI industry and journalism , where there is a place for fair compensation and works are not used without authorization.
