Peter Magyar becomes Prime Minister of Hungary

The leader of the Tisza party, Peter Magyar, who won the parliamentary elections in Hungary on April 12, became the country's prime minister. Zelenskyy congratulated Magyar on taking office.

This is reported by the Hungarian publication Telex.

Peter Magyar was sworn in as Prime Minister and marched through Kossuth Square in Budapest.

In his inaugural speech, Magyar declared that he would “not rule, but serve his country.”

“The Hungarian people have given us the authority to end decades of continuous movement, to change not only the government but also the system. However, there is no change of the system and justice without reconciliation, but this is impossible without confrontation,” said Peter Magyar in his speech.

He also said that 3 million Hungarians live in poverty and that Viktor Orban's previous government left him and his Tisza party with “a huge budget deficit.” But he promises that Hungary is “capable of renewal” and can imagine itself as “a united nation.”

The President of the Council of the European Union, António Costa, said that he wishes all the best to Peter Magyar. His statement is reported by the correspondent of Suspilny.

“We are ready to work with the new Hungarian government. Europe is built on respect for sovereignty and the diversity of peoples, nations and member states. And we respect the free choice of our citizens. Sometimes they choose one leader, sometimes other leaders,” Costa emphasized.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Peter Magyar on taking office.

“Hope and the promise of renewal are a powerful signal in these difficult times. We have important work ahead of us. For Hungary and for Europe, we move forward together,” Ursula von der Leyen wrote.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also congratulated Peter Magyar on taking office.

“Ukraine is ready to deepen cooperation with Hungary and build strong relations between our countries, based on good neighborliness and respect for our peoples. Together we can strengthen our nations and make all of Europe stronger,” the president wrote.
