Oleh Doroshchuk won a historic “gold” for Ukraine in the men's high jump at the World Indoor Championships

Ukrainian high jumper Oleh Doroshchuk won a medal at the World Indoor Athletics Championships for the first time in his career — becoming the champion of the competition in Torun.

Doroshchuk competed at the World Indoor Championships for the third time in his career. At the two previous world championships, the Ukrainian finished in the top 5: in 2024 he came fourth (2.24 m), while last year he came fifth with a best result of 2.28 m.

In the 2026 World Championships final, Doroshchuk competed against 11 other divers. The Ukrainian's rivals included Korean Wu Sanhyeok, Czech Jan Štefela, Jamaicans Romain Beckford and Raymond Richards, among others.

At the height of 2.26 m, only half of the participants remained in the sector. Three of them took the first three bars without mistakes: Doroshchuk, as well as Wu and Richards. And already at the bar of 2.30 m, the Ukrainian took the lead: he took it on the first attempt, while his rivals did not succeed.

In the end, besides Doroshchuk, Mexican Eric Portillo managed to clear 2.30 m. The medalist was determined at 2.33 m — this bar was not beaten by anyone, but Doroshchuk won the “gold” due to the fewer number of attempts used.
