The head of the parliamentary faction of the Hungarian opposition party Jobbik (Jobbik Magyarországért Mozgalom; “Movement for a Better Hungary”), László György Lukács, has withdrawn his candidacy from the parliamentary elections in Hungary. The elections will be held on April 12.
This is reported by the Hungarian publication Telex.
László György Lukács ran for the Hungarian Parliament in the single-member district of Karcsag. Prior to that, Lukács had been elected to the Hungarian Parliament on the Jobbik party list since 2014.
László György Lukács himself confirmed to Telex that he had withdrawn his candidacy. Earlier, representatives of the “Jobbik” party, Gábor Staudt and Istvan Földi, withdrew their candidacy. Istvan Földi noted that he was withdrawing in favor of the opposition party “Tisa” and called on his voters to vote for candidates from “Tisa” in the Szatmár region.
Laszlo György Lukács did not give a reason for his withdrawal from the elections. The Jobbik party has been in opposition to the ruling Fidesz party and its leader Viktor Orbán since 2022. Thus, in March, the Jobbik party criticized the introduction of a bill on the two-month seizure of Ukrainian assets seized by law enforcement officers during the detention of Oschadbank collectors until the “investigation into the seizure” is completed. The chairman of the committee, Zoltan Szas from this party, noted that the introduction of the bill is taking place “quickly”, and therefore cannot support the bill.
The Jobbik party did not collect enough signatures to register its list for the Hungarian parliamentary elections. However, individual party representatives are still participating in the Hungarian election races in certain single-member districts.
