Two representatives of Ukraine, Marta Kostyuk and Angelina Kalinina, received opponents in the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid.
Seven Ukrainian tennis players played in the main draw of the Madrid tournament, but only two reached the third round. Kostyuk started with a victory over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva 6:1, 6:3, while Kalinina defeated her highest-ranked opponent in 16 months, the 24th-ranked player in the world from the Czech Republic, Maria Bouzkova, in straight sets.
Who will the Ukrainian women play against in the next round?
- Angelina Kalinina will play for a place in the round of 16 against Naomi Osaka, a four-time major champion and former world number one, who is seeded 14th and ranked 15th in the WTA rankings.
- The Japanese player previously defeated Colombian Camila Osorio. Kalinina and Osaka have only had one face-to-face meeting – back in 2015, when the Japanese player won in three sets at the ITF tournament in the American Osprey.
- Marta Kostyuk's opponent will be world number five Jessica Pegula. The American is the fifth seed and defeated Briton Katie Boulter in the previous round.
- Kostiuk and Pegula have played six head-to-head matches, with the American winning 4-2. The two rivals met in the semifinals of Brisbane in 2026, with Kostiuk winning in less than an hour (6-0, 6-3). Marta also defeated Pegula in the semifinals of the 2024 San Diego tournament.
