In February, for the first time since 2023, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated more territories than they lost. In particular, in the Zaporizhia direction, airborne assault units repelled the offensive and cleared 8 settlements from the enemy.
Kyrylo Sazonov, a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and political scientist, explained to Channel 24 that the February successes were the result of targeted and decisive actions by our military.
Why were the Armed Forces of Ukraine able to liberate the territories in February?
In February, the turning point was the events in the Hulyaipil direction, where airborne assault units were transferred, which stopped the enemy offensive and launched a counterattack.
The enemy was repelled and pushed back, but it is not worth calling it a full-fledged counteroffensive – there are no resources for this. The specificity of the current battles is infiltration and a chaotic gray zone, where our positions and the Russian ones are so intertwined that no one can say that they fully control the territory,
– Sazonov noted.
In the Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk directions, the Armed Forces of Ukraine completely cleared 7 or 8 settlements – they checked every basement and yard, turning the former gray zone into a controlled territory.
The Russian plan envisaged advancing towards Zaporizhia through the Hulyaipil direction, where at the end of 2025 the situation for the Armed Forces of Ukraine was deteriorating – this is what forced the General Staff to develop countermeasures and launch an offensive in the south.
Russia tried to advance west and capture the Orikhov direction as an additional bridgehead for a strike towards Zaporizhia. It was through Orikhov and the dominant heights around that the Russians tried to reach an artillery range to destroy the city, the industrial zone, and the dam.
“In the Pokrovsko-Mirnograd direction, the enemy is concentrating forces for further advancement to Dobropillya and access to Kostyantynivka – a key Ukrainian agglomeration in the Donetsk region,” Sazonov emphasized.
