SBU Colonel Suggests Russia Will Strike Ukraine with a Nuclear Weapon

Main points

  • Russia has once again started saying that Europe allegedly wants to transfer nuclear weapons to Ukraine. Putin has once again resorted to nuclear blackmail.
  • People's Deputy, Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, and SBU Colonel Roman Kostenko suggested whether there is a risk that Russia will strike Ukraine with nuclear weapons.

On the fourth anniversary of the full-scale war, Russia has once again started spreading rumors that it is preparing to transfer nuclear weapons to Ukraine. This raises the question of whether an enemy will ever try to strike our country with a nuclear weapon.

People's Deputy, Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, and SBU Colonel Roman Kostenko told Channel 24 that Russia actually had nothing to boast about on February 24. Therefore, they again resorted to nuclear blackmail.

Putin raises the stakes

According to Kostenko, Putin actually wants to show once again how strong and powerful he is during the negotiations. That is why there are statements about nuclear weapons. In parallel, the enemy organized a series of terrorist attacks in Ukraine.

In fact, Russia has failed to achieve its strategic goals in 4 years of full-scale war. At the same time, they constantly talk about the power of their army. Now they are losing a huge number of personnel in exchange for small advances.

I can't say that we are winning. But they are losing a lot of people. At the beginning of a full-scale war, Putin threatened NATO countries if they intervened. Now we see that there are attacks on Russia every day,
– said Kostenko.

Could Russia launch a nuclear strike on Ukraine?

As Kostenko emphasized, this option cannot be ruled out. Russia has strategic and tactical nuclear weapons. The latter was invented to break through defense lines on a certain part of the front.

Tactical nuclear weapons are capable of causing significant destruction, but not along the entire front line. It's not like it's just a hit and that's it. Of course, Russia has weapons of mass destruction. And it's difficult to predict anything here. You can't say 100% that it won't happen. But right now it's unlikely,
– Kostenko noted.

What did Russia say about nuclear weapons?

  • Against the backdrop of the 4th anniversary of the full-scale war, Russia's foreign intelligence service said that Great Britain and France allegedly intend to transfer nuclear weapons to Ukraine. All this is supposedly to be “disguised as Ukrainian development.”
  • A spokesman for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said it was all a lie. Russian dictator Putin is trying to divert attention from his crimes in Ukraine.
  • President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Putin always makes up stories about nuclear weapons when Russia fails to achieve success on the battlefield, another element of pressure from the Kremlin amid the talks.
