Sanctions against Lukashenko are a powerful blow to him

Main points

  • Ukraine has imposed sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko due to his support for Russia in the war against Ukraine.
  • Deputy Head of the Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, Pavel Latushko, explained why this is a strong move from Ukraine.

On February 18, Ukraine imposed sanctions against the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. Kyiv is sending a clear signal to the West that it is not worth flirting with dictators.

Deputy Head of the Transitional Cabinet of Belarus Pavel Latushko told Channel 24 that the sanctions against Lukashenko are a “massive blow” to Lukashenko. Ukraine is demonstrating that it perceives him as someone who is helping Russia in the war against Ukraine. It should also not be forgotten that Lukashenko helped Russia illegally transfer children from the temporarily occupied territories.

A clear message from Ukraine

According to Latushko, Ukraine is sending a signal that it does not recognize Lukashenko as the president of Belarus. This is also a manifestation of support for Belarusian society, which is waiting for the self-proclaimed president to lose power.

Another signal goes to the West. Ukraine is demonstrating to Western countries that you shouldn't flirt with dictators. You need to talk to them through the language of force. They only understand this language,
– said Latushko.

Please note! In 2025, Russia placed repeaters near the Belarusian border with Ukraine. This helps the enemy coordinate attacks on the northern and western regions of Ukraine.

Lukashenko did not stop helping Russia after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Now the entire military-industrial complex of Belarus is focused on supporting the aggressor country.

Last year, Lukashenko announced plans to build a drone factory. 100,000 units per year. Last week, he said at a meeting that he would fully supply Belarus with Grad shells. It is clear what he will do with them. He will sell them to Russia. He is putting the economy on military rails to make money from the war. Money doesn't smell good to him,
– Latushko noted.

Sanctions against Lukashenko

  • On February 18, Ukraine imposed sanctions against the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. All because of his systematic facilitation of the murders of Ukrainians and playing along with Russia.
  • In the second half of 2025, Russia deployed a network of relay stations in Belarus. This allowed them to directly control drones, which improved the possibilities for attacks in Northern Ukraine. Some of the attacks the enemy would not have been able to carry out without the help of Belarus.
  • Journalists reported that equipment related to the Oreshnik missile system was spotted in Belarus. Russia recently attacked the Lviv region with this missile.
