Pokrovsky direction – how the Russian offensive tactics changed

Main points

  • In the Pokrovsky direction, Russia increased the number of infantry in assaults, using light equipment and infiltration tactics.
  • Russian “meat” assault groups are used to exhaust Ukrainian forces, and after they are consolidated, regular units such as the Marines enter.

In the Pokrovsky direction, Russia has increased the number of infantry in assaults, moving from heavy mechanized attacks to light equipment and infiltration tactics. However, the quality of these troops has declined significantly, as fighters often surrender.

Volodymyr Chernyak, an officer of the Rubizh brigade of the NGU, explained to Channel 24 that the “meat assaults” are a strategy of attrition, and discontent is growing in the Russian hinterland due to the lack of payments.

Why is Russia throwing untrained fighters into the assault?

Now the Russians are increasingly using motorcycles and ATVs in their assaults. However, this tactic is losing ground, as improving weather allows Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance to detect such groups on the approaches and destroy them with the help of UAVs and fire support.

In parallel, the enemy continues to actively use infiltration tactics. However, a year ago, when the Russians only began to use it, the fighters had normal communication with the command. Now they often go into the rear without communication and food, and simply hide until hunger forces them to come out.

Some simply turn on our military to surrender. The enemy's tactics do not change qualitatively – only quantitatively. But we should not forget that Russia has well-trained units – in particular, the Rubizh brigade is currently standing against such units,
– said Chernyak.

Poorly trained “meat” assault groups are just a tool for attrition, a way to force Ukrainian forces to waste ammunition. But as soon as such a group is established somewhere, regular units are sent there – marines and other well-trained units. Russia fights with great resources and in different ways.

Russia has not even announced mobilization yet, but is already carrying out large-scale assaults with huge human losses. Putin does not care about human lives, he would rather save equipment and scrap metal.

“Russians know how to turn great human losses into a feat, they are already forming a cult of the SVO. I think that the domestic consumer is “swallowing” this with pleasure, and will continue to go to the army,” Chernyak noted.

Please note! The spokesman for the Southern Defense Forces, Vladislav Voloshin, reported that the Russians are involving the entire mobilized contingent in the fighting to compensate for losses at the front. The Russian troops are systematically suffering heavy losses, but they are also attracting new volunteers.

What is known about the Russian offensive?

  • At the front, Russia has increased the intensity of its offensives. The enemy is trying to break through the defenses in the Pokrovsky and Aleksandrovsky directions. However, the SOU destroyed a lot of enemy equipment.
  • The Russian army is moving equipment to the north of the Donetsk region. The enemy has also transported a significant number of air defense missiles through Mariupol.
  • The enemy army also continues to attempt to advance in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, but without tangible results.
