The Russian GRU recruited an IDP from Luhansk Oblast who helped prepare attacks on three regions of Ukraine. The agent was preparing to transmit the geolocations of strategic objects to Russia.
He faces life imprisonment for his actions, the Security Service of Ukraine reported.
How was the Russian corrections officer detained?
The SBU counterintelligence reported the arrest of another Russian GRU agent. He was trying to give the enemy the coordinates of strategic targets in the Volyn, Rivne, and Ternopil regions for attacks.
The detainee identified energy and aviation infrastructure, mobile communication towers, as well as key facilities of Ukrzaliznytsia with intensive freight train traffic.
After being recruited, the 42-year-old man traveled around the western regions in his own car. Using a video recorder, he recorded the geolocations of objects and transmitted the data to a curator in Russia, the SBU added.
SBU officers exposed the attacker at the initial stage of his intelligence activity, documented him and detained him at his place of residence,
– the message says.
Before that, according to the investigation, the detainee got a job at a critical enterprise and received a reservation from the mobilization. He established contact with the Russian special services through a relative who lives in the TOT.
During the searches, the SBU seized a smartphone from the corrector, including the contacts of the Russian curator. His identity has already been established.
The agent was informed of suspicion under the article of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – high treason under martial law. He is in custody. The man faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
