Stellantis is expanding its partnership with Qualcomm to integrate artificial intelligence into its brands' future cars. The companies are betting on new electronic architectures and automated driving.

Automotive concern Stellantis has announced a significant expansion of its cooperation with Qualcomm. The new partnership involves the use of the Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform in future generations of cars of almost all brands of the group. This is reported by Ubergizmo .

Why is Stellantis making a large-scale transition to AI platforms?

It's not just about updating multimedia systems or digital displays. Companies plan to significantly upgrade the “electronic brain” of cars by integrating centralized data processing systems built on specialized systems-on-a-chip.

The Snapdragon Digital Chassis will be part of the STLA Brain software-electronic architecture that Stellantis is developing as the foundation for the next generation of cars. This system will be responsible for multimedia, networking, driver assistance and real-time AI functions .

It is expected that the new technological base will allow the manufacturer to more quickly implement modern features in all models at the same time, rather than adapting each system separately for different brands.

One of the key components will be Snapdragon Ride Pilot , Qualcomm’s automated driving platform, which supports various levels of driver assistance, including Level 2+ features.

As Digitimes writes, the system actually allows the car to partially take control under certain conditions – for example, to maintain lane control, control the distance, and provide a “hands-free” mode on certain sections of the road.

Qualcomm says that AI algorithms should make driving safer and more intuitive for the user.

Stellantis wants to make car development cheaper

According to Stellantis' Director of Engineering and Technology Ned Curic , the new architecture will allow digital functions to be scaled “with great speed and efficiency” across all of the group's brands at once.

In addition to technological modernization, the cooperation is also strategic in nature. The companies signed a letter of intent to integrate aiMotive, a subsidiary of Stellantis , which is engaged in autonomous driving and simulations.

This means that Qualcomm can access Stellantis' own AI developments to create a single computing platform.

Qualcomm spokesman Nakul Duggal called the new agreement “a major turning point.” He said standardizing the electronic foundation of cars will allow:

  • update cars through software;

For Stellantis, it is also an attempt to catch up with competitors who are already actively investing in their own AI platforms and software – including Tesla, Mercedes-Benz and BMW .
