Cleaning: how to do it in 15 minutes using the Fly Lady system

To waste the whole day again, to be tired as hell, and to be angry that the weekend will be spent on such an uninteresting and boring activity. In fact, everything is much easier, you just need to change your approach to putting things in order, informs Ukr.Media.

This is the FlyLady cleaning method, named after space-management expert Marla Seely, also known as FlyLady, who encourages people to complete their cleaning tasks in 15-minute intervals.

What is the FlyLady cleaning method?

The idea is that cleaning your space shouldn't be rushed or stressful. Breaking it down into smaller tasks can help you get through it quickly and feel more relaxed. For example, you could start by cleaning the sink for just 15 minutes a day, and then gradually add more to your routine. “You'll also be more likely to keep the areas you've already cleaned tidy,” says Silly.

Before you pick up the mop, you need to make a cleaning schedule that you will stick to. And, surprisingly, it includes not only scrubbing cabinets and sorting socks, but also other, much more interesting activities.

Take, for example, Cilla’s own morning routine. “When you wake up, make your bed and quickly clean the toilet. Then take a shower and wash yourself, making the most of your time. Then you do your hair and put on your makeup. After you’re done with the bath, do the laundry. If the kitchen doesn’t need cleaning, take the dishwasher apart, make breakfast, and feed the pets,” she says.

At this point, you’ll start thinking about how you’re going to spend the rest of your day. Check your calendar, make a to-do list, and plan what you’re going to eat for dinner. “Then take a few minutes to put your clothes in the dryer. Finish off your morning routine with some self-care (yes, self-care is just as important). Don’t forget to take your vitamins and any medications, take some time to relax, and enjoy breakfast. If you like to meditate, do that too,” suggests the cleaning expert. Sounds pretty great, right?

FlyLady cleaning areas

Another key component of the method is the concept of zones. FlyLady suggests dividing your home into five different zones. The first week of the month is dedicated to zone one, and so on.

“Set aside 15 minutes a day to declutter your home. Move on to zone two, where you’ll spend 15 minutes a day on the kitchen, usually during the first full week of the month. Zone three—the second full week of the month—requires you to focus on the bathroom and one other room, such as a home office, craft area, or nursery. Zone four, which falls on the third full week of the month, is a time to declutter your bedroom, bathrooms, and closets,” explains Silley.

Finally, zone five is time to tackle the living room. It falls on the fifth week of the month and usually only takes a few days, since zones one and five fall on the same week. Keep in mind that each zone only takes 15 minutes a day to clean, which FlyLady says should yield noticeable results within a week of starting.

Be patient, but don't be heroic.

With a busy schedule that may include taking care of children and fulfilling professional duties, cleaning the house should not seem like a heavy burden. This is the most important thing. If you feel that you don't have the strength – just postpone today's cleaning until tomorrow, but tomorrow let it be half an hour and two zones.
