11 things that can actually be washed in the machine
We have collected what can actually be washed in a machine if you follow certain rules, Ukr.Media reports.
Karemat
Karemat is the general name for sports mats for yoga, fitness and tourism made of “foam”. Sweat and skin particles remain on the material after intensive training, as well as dust and dirt. Due to moisture and organic particles, the karemat quickly becomes a breeding ground for microbes and bacteria, so it needs to be washed regularly. The process of hand washing is laborious, but there is good news – the mat will not deteriorate in the washing machine. Choose a delicate mode with a low spin speed. Do not use automatic drying – it will definitely make the karemat unusable. Roll the mat up or lay it in waves, and it is better to lay towels in the voids. Towels in the drum help balance the washing.
Bath curtain
Moisture, soap scum, and dirt accumulate on the curtain in the bathroom. All of this is an excellent environment for the reproduction of microbes and bacteria, as well as mold. Therefore, the accessory should be washed often and ideally changed every few months. But you can extend the life of the curtain if you wash it in a machine on a delicate setting. If mold appears, first soak it in a special product. Plastic and fabric curtains will survive machine washing. But polyethylene ones are unlikely. Delicate setting and low temperature will help prevent damage.
Backpack
Fabric backpacks and gym bags can also be washed in the washing machine as they become dirty. First, check all pockets and remove any lining. Turn inside out and place in a fabric bag. Choose a 30 degree wash and a gentle spin cycle.
Important: If your backpack or bag has cardboard parts, they will not survive washing. The same goes for leather products.
Leather goods
“Leather” pants, skirts, jackets and other things can be washed in a machine if you turn them inside out. Choose a delicate mode and low spin speed. Modern eco-leather is strong enough, and nothing will happen to things. But if the product is made of leatherette, then it is better not to risk it: it will most likely peel off after machine washing.
Animal accessories
Beds, leashes, and soft toys for animals require frequent cleaning and washing. And they can be sent to the washing machine – if there are no leather or metal inserts, rigid frames. Before washing, brush the fur from the surfaces to avoid clogging the machine and so that things are washed better.
Down jacket
Although manufacturers of down jackets recommend taking them to a dry cleaner, almost everyone washes these clothes at home in a machine. To prevent the jacket from deforming, put special balls in the drum. Use a delicate mode and a small amount of washing gel so that there are no streaks. If the product does not wring out properly, repeat the spin cycle. After drying, beat the down jacket like a pillow so that the filler is evenly distributed inside. Do not wash things with fur trims that do not detach. And remember that frequent washing will still damage the item, so spot-treat small stains.
Bath mat
Bath and toilet mats are also at risk due to high humidity, constant contact with water, foam, dirt and dust. If you have fabric or foam products and they fit in the drum, you can wash them in the machine as they become dirty. You can’t use automatic washing only for products made of hard plastic with massage spikes. They will deteriorate on their own — and can ruin the equipment.
Pillow
Pillows with synthetic fillers will survive machine washing just fine. But not orthopedic ones — they can lose their properties. Because the machine can deform them, and they will become not only useless, but also harmful. You can also not wash feather pillows, except for the smallest ones that easily fit in the drum. All others can.
Silicone potholders and mats
They are machine washable. Wash them separately from clothes and do not overload the drum.
Sports shoes
Textile sports shoes — sneakers, tennis shoes, sneakers — can be washed in a machine. However, automatic washing is prohibited if the shoes have leather or cardboard inserts: for example, in the soles. If you decide to wash them, use bags that fit the size of the shoes. And add towels so that the products do not dangle in the machine and break the drum. Wash on a delicate cycle, do not spin.
Baseball caps
Baseball caps and hats can also be washed in the machine on a delicate cycle — at a spin speed of no more than 400. If the hats have high-quality visors, nothing will happen to them. However, if the visor is made of cardboard, it is better to wash the cap by hand.
