Olympic medalist falls, disqualification and title regained: chaotic outcome of 1500m race in Australia

An independent panel has upheld the appeal of 20-year-old runner Claudia Hollingsworth, restoring her gold medal from the national track and field championships after a previous disqualification for an incident involving a fall by rival 2024 Olympic silver medalist Jessica Gall, ABC reports.

The women's 1500m final at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney was marred by an incident in the final 50m. Three-time national champion and Olympic silver medallist Jess Gull, who was leading the race at the finish line, fell after contact with Claudia Hollingsworth. Hollingsworth crossed the line first in 4:17.06.

However, immediately after the race, Hull's representatives filed an official protest. After reviewing additional video footage, race officials decided to disqualify Hollingsworth, finding that her actions during the overtaking attempt contributed to Hull's fall. As a result, the gold medal was awarded to Sarah Billings, with second place going to Abby Caldwell.

Hollingsworth appealed the disqualification, arguing that the contact was accidental and occurred during a high-speed struggle for position.

An independent panel was brought in to resolve the dispute, interviewing interested parties and reviewing all available angles of the shooting. As a result of this review , the original disqualification was lifted and Hollingsworth was reinstated as national champion.

“The Commission, having reviewed all available video footage and interviewed interested parties, has decided to uphold Hollingsworth's appeal,” said a statement from Athletics Australia.

The organisers also rejected a proposal to hold a re-run. Meanwhile, the event's status as a qualifier for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games will be further reviewed. Hollingsworth is expected to be given a quota place in the one-mile event, which will replace the 1500 metres on the Games programme, while other athletes including Hall, Billings and Caldwell will bid for the remaining two places.

After missing out on a fourth consecutive title, the 29-year-old Gull analyzed the race tactics after the finish, noting that the slow pace could have been one of the factors that led to the tight fight and subsequent contact on the inside radius.

“It was so slow, things happen. I don't know who it was, but the one who was trying to run along the edge just touched me, and when you run that fast, you fall. It's racing, things happen,” said Hall.

Hollingsworth, for her part, acknowledged the riskiness of her maneuver, but emphasized the lack of deliberate action.

“I should have been smarter and maybe run to a more outer radius, but if you see a free space and a small gap, you use it. It's a complete coincidence,” she noted.

Hollingsworth will continue her championship run in the preliminary 800-meter races, while Gull withdrew from the event due to leg pain after a fall, but plans to compete in the 5,000-meter race.
