The second number in the ATP world ranking, Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, has officially announced that he will not be able to participate in this year's Wimbledon and will also miss the entire grass season. Alcaraz announced this on his Instagram page
Alcaraz started the current year with a victory at the Australian Open, which allowed him to become the youngest winner of a career Grand Slam in the history of men's tennis.
However, Alcaraz was prevented from building on this success by a right wrist injury. The Spaniard suffered the injury in mid-April at a tournament in Barcelona, where he defeated Finn Otto Virtanen in three sets in the first round. Because of this injury, the tennis player was forced to withdraw not only from the competition in Catalonia, but also from the home Masters in Madrid and the French Open, where he is the current title holder.
“My recovery is going well and I feel much better, but unfortunately I am still not ready to compete, so I have to withdraw from the grass tournaments in London and Wimbledon. These are two really special tournaments for me and I will miss them very much. We will continue to work to return as soon as possible,” Alcaraz said.
“I have a very long career ahead of me. If I force things at this Roland Garros, it could seriously hurt me in future tournaments,” he concluded.
The defending finalist's withdrawal from Wimbledon significantly changes the balance of power on the men's tour. Alcaraz and his main rival Yannick Sinner have completely dominated the majors in recent times, sharing the last nine Grand Slam titles, five of which have been won by the Spaniard.
Missing the London and Wimbledon tournaments will also result in a significant loss of ranking points for Alcaraz, allowing Sinner, who has already taken the world number one title from him and won six Masters 1000 tournaments, to consolidate his lead.
The main draw of Wimbledon 2026 will take place from June 29 to July 12. In particular, seven Ukrainian women who made it into the main draw of the competition will perform there.
