Liverpool set a unique record for defeats in the Premier League after conceding in the last minutes

The reigning Premier League champion Liverpool suffered a defeat in the Premier League match against Wolverhampton (1:2), conceding a decisive goal in the 90+4th minute

Liverpool's match against Wolverhampton Wanderers ended goalless in the first half. Wolves defender Rodrigo Gomes opened the scoring in the 76th minute, and five minutes later Reds striker Mohamed Salah equalised.

Instead, the decisive goal came from Wolverhampton midfielder Andre, who fired a long-range shot into the bottom left corner of the net in the 90+4th minute, giving Wolverhampton a 2-1 victory over Liverpool.

The defeat against Wolverhampton is not the first time this season that Liverpool have conceded a winner in second-half stoppage time. In the 2025/26 season, the Reds have conceded seven such matches, losing five of them.

Five defeats after 90+ minutes in the Premier League is the most in a single season in the competition's history.

All Liverpool goals conceded in stoppage time in Premier League matches in the 2025/26 season

  • 90+13th minute – Erling Haaland (“Manchester City”, 25th round – 1:2)
  • 90+7 – Harrison Reid (“Fulham”, 20th round – 2:2)
  • 90+7 – Eddie Nketiah (“Crystal Palace”, 6th round – 1:2)
  • 90+6 – Ao Tanaka (“Leeds”, 6th round – 3:3)
  • 90+5 – Amin Adli (“Bournemouth” – 2:3)
  • 90+5 – Estevan (“Chelsea”, 7th round, – 1:2)
  • 90+4 – Andre (“Wolverhampton”, 29th round — 1:2)

Andre's winning goal for Wolves also made history, according to Opta, as it was the first time a team in the relegation zone had scored a winning goal in the 90th minute against the reigning Premier League champions.

“My expectations have changed throughout the season, because I expected more from us than what we are currently fighting for. But this is another setback, and we did not help ourselves at all with this result. We lost points in a game where it was absolutely not necessary. If you look at the course of the game, the Wolves made the game very difficult for us, they were compact. It was difficult for us to dominate in situations on the side of the field,” said the head coach of the Reds, Arne Slot.

“We were slow, predictable, careless in possession and made bad decisions. Of course we didn't miss chances, but if you play like that you can get a result like this match and it's disappointing… The whole season is not easy. It always [feels] like ups and downs. The Premier League clubs are strong and we have games every three or four days and it's a big struggle,” added Liverpool captain Vigil van Dijk.

According to statistics portal Opta, Andre's winning goal for Wolverhampton Wanderers was the first time in Premier League history that a team from the relegation zone scored a 90th-minute winner against the reigning Premier League champions. The Reds won their 20th Premier League title in the 2024/25 season.

After the match against Wolves, Liverpool occupy an interim fifth place in the Premier League table – with 48 points after 29 matches. While Wolverhampton remains in last place with 16 points – the team has three wins this season.

The Reds will next face Wolves in the FA Cup on Friday, March 6 at 10:00 PM Kyiv time.
