Daria Snigur won the main draw of WTA tournaments for the first time in two seasons

Ukrainian tennis player Daria Snigur reached the 1/8 finals of the WTA 250 tournament in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. In the 1/16 final match, Snigur proved to be stronger than Frenchwoman Tiancoa Rakotomanga Rajaonay.

Snigur began her journey at the tournament with qualification: in the first round she defeated another Ukrainian tennis player, Angelina Kalinin, and in the final of the selection she defeated Alena Bolshova, who represents Spain.

Snigur's first opponent in the main draw was French tennis player Tiancoa Rakotomanga Rajaona, ranked 116th in the world. This is the first face-to-face meeting in official matches for the tennis players.

Snigur started the match with a break and held the initiative until the end of the game. The Ukrainian player closed the first set also on her opponent's serve, with a score of 5:3.

In the decisive second set, Snigur made a dash to win three games, and soon led 5:1 with two breaks. The Ukrainian player was unable to close the match on her first attempt on her own serve – her opponent won two match points, but did so with the score 5:3.

What does the Bullfinch result mean?

  • The first victory in the main WTA tournaments since 2024, when the Ukrainian won the first round of Wimbledon.
  • For the first time since 2023, she reached the 1/8 finals of WTA tournaments. The last time the Ukrainian tennis player managed to do this was in 2023 – at the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca.
  • In the round of 16, Snigur will face the winner of the qualifier pair , Lucrezia Stefanini from Italy and the second seed of the tournament, Jacqueline Cristian from Romania.

Also continuing to participate in the tournament is Ukraine's fourth seed Oleksandra Oliynikova, who reached the quarterfinals and will face fourth-seeded Chinese Xin Yu Wang and Swiss Rebecca Masarova.
