
The fifth day of play has concluded in the elite division of the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Four matches were played within it, the results of which influenced the positions of the teams in the upper and lower parts of the standings of both groups.
Following the results of the games on Tuesday, May 19, the national teams of Austria, Norway, Slovakia and Hungary won, which affected the distribution of places in the tournament tables. In particular, the Austrian team showed a series of three consecutive victories in regular time at the world championships for the first time in 27 years.

Following the results of the fifth match day, the Hungarian national team won its first victory, having 3 points after three matches played. While the Great Britain national team dropped to the last, eighth position. Instead, Group B got a sole leader: Slovakia could not hold on to the victory over Slovenia in regular time.
How was the fifth day of the 2026 World Cup?
- In Group A, Austria defeated Latvia 3-1. There were no goals scored in the first period, but the Austrians took the lead in the second twenty minutes. The winning goal in the third period during the draw was scored by Benjamin Nissner.
- In the other match in this group, Hungary inflicted a crushing defeat on Great Britain with a score of 5:0 and earned its first points of the tournament.
- In Group B, Slovakia defeated Slovenia in the first shootout of the tournament. The Slovenians fought back three times during the match, taking the game into overtime, but the Slovak team managed to record a winning result in the shootout – 3:1.
- Also in Group B, Norway won 4-0 for the second time in a row, this time beating Italy. Norway goalkeeper Henrik Gaukeland kept a clean sheet for the second time in a row, reaching 120 minutes without conceding a goal.
