Zelensky and Starmer meet in London
According to Sky News, the Ukrainian leader arrived at 10 Downing Street on Saturday evening at approximately 19:30 Kyiv time.
Starmer made a symbolic gesture by stepping back to greet Zelensky personally and hugging him before they shook hands in front of the cameras and entered the building.
“You have the full support of the whole of the United Kingdom. We will stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes. I heard the cheers in the streets – people coming out to show how much they support you and how much they support Ukraine. We have an unwavering determination to stand with you and to achieve what we both want to achieve, which is a lasting peace for Ukraine, based on sovereignty and security. This is of the utmost importance for Ukraine, for the era and for the United Kingdom,” Keir Starmer said.
In turn, Volodymyr Zelensky noted that he was very happy to be in the UK. “I saw a lot of people outside, and I want to thank you and the people of the United Kingdom for such significant support from the very beginning of this war… We are very happy to have such strategic partners in Ukraine. We count on your support,” the Ukrainian president added.
Zelensky also expressed hope for a meeting with King Charles III on Sunday.
Zelensky's trip to Britain is part of his broader diplomatic strategy to secure continued military and financial aid. The meeting comes ahead of a summit of EU leaders in London on Sunday, where security issues for Ukraine will be a central topic of discussion.
