US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff said he expects “good news” in the near future in the peace process between Ukraine and Russia.
He said this in an interview with Fox News.
“I think at the management level they are struggling to get the deal done. Jared [Kushner] and I hope that we will put forward some proposals to both sides that will bring them closer together over the next three weeks (…) So hopefully you will hear good news soon,” the official said.
After that, in his opinion, a direct summit between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin or a trilateral meeting between them and Donald Trump is even possible.
Witkoff called this war pointless given the casualties and believes that Ukraine and Russia do not really want to go to war with each other.
“They're arguing over this territory. You know, everyone throws around the word 'dignity.' But what gives you dignity if you have so many murders?” he says.
The special envoy recalled that he was criticized because he had met with Putin 8 times. However, in his opinion, these meetings were relevant and important, and you can't make a deal with someone if you don't know what kind of person they are.
“We understand where they are. And I don't think the Ukrainians disagree with our assessment. So I think these meetings were important, and I hope we get this whole thing done,” Steve Witkoff added.
