US expands sanctions on Iran after mass deaths in protests

The US Treasury Department has imposed new sanctions against seven Iranian citizens and one organization over protests in the country that have led to the deaths of thousands of citizens.

This is reported on the website of the US Treasury.

Four of the seven Iranians targeted are identified as members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The US has already imposed a series of sanctions against Iran. On January 29, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced plans to revoke immigration privileges for senior Iranian officials and their family members.

In 2019, the US designated it a foreign “terrorist” organization, the first time Washington has used that designation against part of another government.

On January 29, EU foreign ministers designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. In response, Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), on January 30, called the armed forces of EU countries “terrorists.”
