UN General Assembly Adopts Resolution on Ukraine on Anniversary of Russia's War
As reported by Ukrinform's special correspondent in New York, 93 delegates supported the resolution, 18 voted against, and 65 abstained.
The text, which has received support from most democratic countries, states that Russia's full-scale intervention in Ukraine has been ongoing for three years and continues to have “devastating and long-term consequences not only for Ukraine, but also for other regions and global stability.”
The General Assembly reaffirms its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. It also emphasizes that “no territorial acquisitions made under the threat or as a result of the use of force shall be perceived as legitimate.”
Moreover, the resolution expressed serious concern about the possible intervention of North Korean terrorists in the conflict, as well as a warning about the possible further escalation of the situation.
The document calls for an immediate end to hostilities and a peaceful resolution of the conflict against Ukraine. It “reaffirms the urgent need to end the war this year” and achieve peace in accordance with the UN Charter. It also reiterates the demand for Russia to “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.” It also stresses the importance of accountability for the most serious violations of international law committed in Ukraine.
A two-thirds majority of votes cast in favour or against is required to pass a resolution on peace and security issues.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal expressed gratitude to the UN General Assembly for supporting the resolution and stressed that this is a significant step towards restoring the rule of international law.
“I thank the UN General Assembly for supporting the resolution “Promoting a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.” This is an important step towards restoring international law and reaffirming the world's commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,” Shmyhal wrote on Telegram.
He noted that the resolution clearly identifies Russia as an aggressor and confirms the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Shmyhal also emphasized that the resolution clearly demonstrates that any territories acquired by force cannot be recognized as legitimate.
The United Nations held an emergency special session on Monday to mark the third anniversary of Russia's war against Ukraine. The session discussed two draft resolutions, one initiated by Ukraine and one proposed by the United States.
