Ukrainian illustrator creates Guardian cover for 40th anniversary of Chernobyl disaster

Ukrainian illustrator Masha Foya created the cover for the Guardian Weekly issue, which is dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

This is stated on the publication's page.

“Since childhood, the history of Chernobyl has always caused me a strange dissonance – such a tragedy happened on a beautiful spring April day,” Masha explains the ideation process behind her design, in which seasonal greenery disappears into an ominous sky.

In its weekly issue on May 1, the magazine featured the Chernobyl topic on its cover and supplemented it with a special report by Piotr Sauer on the condition of the damaged reactor, which needs repairs after being hit by a Russian drone.

The episode also looks at the ecological legacy of Chernobyl. Jonathan Watts examines the benefits and drawbacks for fauna from the accidental return to the wild, which occurred due to the absence of humans around the accident site.

Illustrator Masha Foya already created a cover for Guardian Weekly in 2022 about Russia's war in Ukraine, which was dedicated to the devastated Mariupol.

Masha Foya is a Ukrainian illustrator from Kyiv. In her works, she seeks new ways to express the “voice” of the illustrator and tries to convey a certain emotion without depicting it literally.

She also works on the design of books, posters, and postcards. Her work has been used by the publishing houses Vivat and “Old Lion Publishing House”.
